Coaching Beaverton HS Lacrosse

In 2012, I was named Head Coach and Director of Beaverton High School Boys Lacrosse. I set out to transform a program—which had never had a winning season—around one purpose: to uncompromisingly grow our players into better people. With that singular focus, I wrote an organizational playbook, hired coaches, developed on-field systems, sharpened strategies, and mentored players. Slowly, I watched as an organization began to turn into a community. And soon I became a small part of something much greater than myself.

We started winning a few games. And some more. Then we made the state playoffs. Then we made it deeper into the playoffs. Then, in 2016, we won the state championship. It was awesome.

There are so many more important things in life than lacrosse, than sports. But there are very few things more important than experiencing a community coming together, growing, and accomplishing something that was previously unimaginable. Being part of that was not only memorable, but life-changing.

Leading Story Lab

As an MBA at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, I was selected twice to speak at Story Lab’s Ross Diaries event, a TEDx-style personal storytelling event attended by over 350 students. In my second year, I served as Story Lab’s student lead, growing participation and engagement to new highs.

Story Lab is a co-created program between the Sanger Leadership Center and the Design+Business Club at Ross. The leadership program focuses on building storytelling skills for both personal and professional contexts. During my tenure, I led program management, coached speakers, and helped with workshop and event planning.

Pursuing the Hult Prize

The Hult Prize is the world’s most prestigious social enterprise pitch competition. It has been called the ”Nobel Prize for Students,” and was featured in a TIME Magazine Cover Story highlighting the “Top 5 Ideas Changing the World.”

In March 2018, I was a member of a University of Michigan Hult Prize team that developed a social enterprise idea focused on increasing accessibility to broadband internet in remote areas. We were named a Hult Prize Regional Finalist and traveled to Boston to pitch our idea in front of judges. Despite not advancing to the next round, it was an invaluable, unforgettable experience at the intersection of business and social impact.
